I, like most writers, am totally fascinated with Norman Mailer's style in The Armies of the Night. I want to get a copy of that book! Oh, sure, I borrowed it from the university library recently, and I loved scanning through it again. (I initially read it when the first half of it came out in Harper's in the March 1968 issue.) But I need to get a copy of that book for my own library! "He had invented a new genre" (Dearborn 235). I want to own it so that I can read it whenever I want, so that I can mark it up with green ink, and so that I can show it to my friends. I want that book to sit prominently on my living room coffee table later this year during our Christmas party. I want people to say, "So, you're reading Norman Mailer, are you?" and "How is that book? I've heard so much about it, but isn't he a loudmouth feminist-bashing bigoted irascible crazy liberal bullheaded silly person?" I want to be able to take quips like that and set them straight. I can't wait to get this book!

We have to get all our data on a little USB flash drive, and quick! Not only that, but we have to get 64 GB of data onto the thing and then start driving at high speed to an unnamed location in the Nevada desert for some top secret work. We need a storage device that is small, unobtrusive, but which can hold a massive amount of data. Well, the answer is here. Unbelievable as it may seem, you can now do just that, downloading a whopping 64GB into one little flash drive, the incredible 64GB Kanguru Flash Blu. This baby looks rugged and is built to take the shock of driving through the desert in a souped up Harley, under the hot baking sun, and moving a lightning speeds. No one will find it if you're searched! It is the largest capacity flash drive available today, and I have read all the good reviews of it, too. The maker, Kanguru Solutions, is a sophisticated cutting-edge company that also manufactures secure flash drives and superfast hard drives. The latest entry into the market is an aluminum flash drive that even the top secret service agents from the CIA would drool over. Kanguru Solutions website has all the pretty little details.
The most famous Gonzo journalism book is Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But there are others in the genre, and certainly others that fall in the less distorted New Journalism genre, such as In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, The Armies of the Night by Norman Mailer and Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff. The writing in each case tends to use fictional techniques, such as scenes, dialog, and penetrating into the minds of the characters. The journalist finds out what the people are thinking by interviewing them and then writing from their point of view. If anyone has any suggestions for books in the genre of Gonzo journalism, please add them in the comments section to this blog post.
I was at a book exposition in New York last week and bought a signed copy of Hal Clement's paperback Star Light but without knowing its true value. RarityGuide.com - Growing database with price guides, rarity lists, museum, forums and more can help you find the value of the rare books, games and other art items that you have bought or are thinking of buying. The smart people invest in things that gain value over time (like art, books, and other rare items), while most people (out of ignorance) buy things that decrease in value, such as computers, cars, and electronic gadgets and televisions. This new Web site can help you make the right investments, especially investments in artistic items like rare books.
A friend of mine, a creative soul of infinite charm and wisdom, told me, when he was 19, "I am Dostoevsky!" He said it with a vehemence that frightened me momentarily. He loved Dostoevsky so much, and he fancied himself possessed of the same passion for storytelling that the Russian exemplified in his novels and novellas. My friend was Russian, which may have contributed to the close identification he felt with the man. My friend felt he would not live to be thirty, and indeed he died young; the result of a drowning accident. Like Hunter S. Thompson, he saw the light, embraced, it and then it was snuffed out before its time.

Press Release:
The above video is not the typical Dragon NaturallySpeaking video. It was created by a blogger named Heather from British Columbia. She writes a blog called Boating in Beautiful British Columbia.
In the video that she has created, she talks about Dragon NaturallySpeaking. She talks about using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. In fact in the video, she is using Dragon NaturallySpeaking while she's talking about it but you don't quite realize that until the video is about halfway done.
The thing that's REALLY interesting about this video, is not the fact that Heather is using the software and it's not the fact the software works for her so much as HOW she chooses to use it. She took Dragon NaturallySpeaking and sat down with her father who is 95 years old. She spent a few minutes with him getting the software tuned to his voice so that the computer recognizes his sentences and words. Then she's lets her father tell some of his great stories to the computer which transcribes everything that he says.
You can tell just by watching the video and listening to her father that he really does have some interesting stories to tell. I have a feeling that I could probably listen to the stories myself quite a bit, enjoying them immensely. And that too is not really the cool thing about this video. Although I'd love to hear her father tells more stories, the COOL THING is that she's using Dragon NaturallySpeaking to capture a piece of her family's oral tradition.
I can think of hundreds of different stories that my family has shared with me over the years that have not been documented. Our family is slowly losing some of those great stories and unfortunately, as we are losing some of our family members. We survivors don't know all of the stories ourselves that our parents or grandparents or our great grandparents knew. But this video shows that you can use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to help capture some of those great stories that your parents and grandparents and great grandparents have probably told you dozens of times.
It's something that we don't always think about, but in a lot of ways those stories are some of the most cherished memories that we will walk away with from our family. And the sad thing is that our family cannot Be with us forever, but their memories can live on and this is where Dragon NaturallySpeaking really shows us its value. It's true for $99 you can use Dragon NaturallySpeaking and you can type 150 words a minute. That's a pretty good value for the software. It's not too expensive and the benefit is tangible.
Now, you can get a useful tool at any computer store or Home Depot or Lowes, and if you don't know how to use it well, then it really doesn't matter what you pay for it. It is a waste of money.
Heather shows us a great way to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to capture some of the most valuable information and stories from her father that she might ever be able to record not only for herself but for her daughter and her grandchildren someday and great-grandchildren and many other branches of the family even.
So that's just another great reason why they Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a pretty cool piece of software. $99 could help you capture your family history easily and even make it indexable too, so that you can search it from your computer. That's just amazing.
My name Brett Bumeter, and I write about Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I've been writing reviews about it for almost 2 years now. You could say that I'm sold on the software, and I hope that this article and this video helps show you the value of using it as well.
Sincerely, Brett Bumeter Softduit Media www.softduit.com
PS this article includes about 376 words that I wrote with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. It took me about 3 1/2 minutes to write and edit this article, which is just a little bit better than 100 words per minute and that includes editing time.
Hunter S. Thompson said there was a rumor that Senator Muskie was using ibogaine during the 1972 presidential campaign. Then he admitted that the rumor had been started by him (Hunter). This is the kind of playful anti-authoritarian mood that propelled Hunter S. Thompson into the spotlight and made him a favorite of all who oppose untrammeled authority.
True enough, there are those who do not cotton to his approach to writing . . . and living. But then there are those who don't enjoy writers like Edgar Allan Poe. I mean, you can't please everyone. Sophomoric might be a good term for some of Thompson's antics, but he was certainly entertainment. Let's give him that. And there is no question that his approach to journalism, although taken by others before him, was a nifty little niche that sparkled and razzle-dazzled for a good while there in the 70s and 80s.
When you visit http://www.legendoftheseeker.com/ you will find a trailer for the new show that resembles The Lord of the Rings and other mythic tales in the tradition of Joseph Campbell. The premiere is November 1st and is not to be missed. Fans of the genre will welcome this new addition to the quest or journey myth, in which a young hero sets out to do a dangerous task in order to save the world. “Legend of the Seeker” is based on the work of Terry Goodkind. The television debut will run two hours.
Hard to believe, but amazing, really! I'm talking about the brand new Hunter S. Thompson book which features the gonzo journalist in a series of color photos, one of which you see reproduced here. Now you can get your own copy and see the man you've been reading about for years; really see him in a way that could not be done before this production came to light. The title is Gonzo and the publisher is Ammo. The book features photographs of the journalist as a young man, in the army, and more. Only 3,000 copies of the volume will be printed.
There are two types of people: There are those who are left-brain and who need directions, and there are those who are right-brain and who prefer a map. In my opinion, the map is the easiest way to get from point A to point B. But I realize that other people prefer directions. Well, now you can have your cake and eat it too. There is a cheap sat nav which gives you both approaches, so that whether you prefer directions or a map, you've got it! What could be nicer than trying to drive somewhere and having your Garmin Nuvi and Garmin Zumo products speaking right to you, telling you when to take a left or a right turn, saying in plain English, "Take a left in point five miles and then stay right." At the same time you'll see the map in front of you displaying where you are and where you're headed. This, to my mind, is the height of luxury for a driver, especially a driver who wants to get to his destination without making any wrong turns. These devices will save you time and also make your life that much easier and more fun, too. You can't beat having a navigation system today. It is almost required for the modern driver!
In this clip from the David letterman Show, Hunter S. Thompson appears to talk about one of his new books. But the interview is a disaster because Thompson, true to the persona he developed in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, is so out of it that he can hardly get a good conversation going and Letterman has to fight every inch of the way to keep things under control and sane and interesting. Intoxicated probably on alcohol or possibly other substances, Hunter can hardly focus and seems to be trying to keep his act together despite his great difficulty focusing. It is a shame that such a funny man and a brilliant writer left us with so few interviews that convey anything of lasting value. The Charlie Rose interview was much better because Hunter seemed more in control of himself.

Then you can start right away searching for the person that you're dreaming of by typing the age and the gender. Sounds fun, right? This is a new way of finding your soulmate or true love, since the Internet is able to connect people much faster and over further distances than traditional methods of meeting.
This is a literary blog, and everything I write about relates to literature. That is why I jumped at the opportunity to talk about Panama. As readers of this blog know, J.D. Salinger retreated to Cornish, New Hampshire to get away from New York in 1953 and he never came back. He was concerned about living in a place that would foster, rather than hinder, his artistic temperament. Meanwhile, his erstwhile girlfriend, Joyce Maynard, has retreated to Mexico and lives there half of the year, conducting workshops. If you are an artist, a writer, a poet, or just someone with an artistic temperament, you may wish to heed Nietzsche's advice about locality and climate being one of the most important things to consider. In Ecce Homo, the great philosopher talks about living where you can feel happy and relaxed: He considers it essential!
I want to tell you something about the pride that people in our family have. We are proud of the way that the family looks. We are glad to compare ourselves to the best and the brightest, and we are not afraid to boast a little in the process. That's probably why we love the VistaPrint line of products, especially their Photo Calendars. One of the calendars we have hangs on the wall in our kitchen. Actually that's not completely accurate. It actually is affixed to the refrigerator door with a number of little bird-shaped magnets. The calendar features a lovely photograph of myself, and our family. The baby is prominently displayed in the photo at the top of the calendar. The calendar is one way of making sure that we see ourselves every time we go to get a drink of milk or every time we attempt to open a bottle of seltzer. The large number of other products that are available from VistaPrint include business cards (we order them for friends and business associates!), stationery, and gift items. This is one of the most professional stationers online, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. In fact, when I need to make business cards, they are the ones I call first. Check this out and get yours today.
This is an image of Hunter S. Thompson during the middle of his career. That career ended tragically on Feb. 20, 2005 when he died of a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head, an act he had been planning for days, if not years. His suicide note to his wife was written and delivered to her four days before the event! None of his friends, including Sheriff Bob, suspected what Hunter had planned for himself. In fact, they claim he was cheerful during the last few days they saw him alive.

My favorite Bible story is the section of Revelations that reads: "the bear gouged out the eyes of the lizard." That verse, in the 1402 translation by Jeremy Hyatt, is unparalleled in its poetry and meter. The entire book of Revelations reads like a psychedelic nightmare. It is a perfect example of what the life of Aldous Huxley was like. Find out more. The greatest imagery in the book is to be found in that chapter. Of course, the Bible has been translated many times, but no translation is exactly like any other. The translators have liberty to use words that they think fit the modern context and culture for which they are translating. The King James version, for example, uses different words for that verse. Nevertheless the poetry is there and illustrates the psychedelic nature of experience for the artist. Find out more. In fact, I can find more poetry in the Bible than in many books of poetry. And yet it is all a story, a fiction which has been handed down and accepted by many as fact. The sad fact is that the poetry is lost when it is treated as fact. The truth is that the lives of many artists revolve around an experience similar to that described in this verse. The life of Huxley is only one example. There are many others. Find out more. You can find additional information about Bible stories and also about Theatre Church as CineMeetings & Events hosts the first Theatre Church Conference at Silver Spring, MD, October 22 & 23.
I just found out about a new documentary called Gonzo, all about you know who. I've got to see this, and so do you! Tom Wolfe is in it, for crying out loud! This is a must see. The man himself, HST, is interviewed; and you can actually understand what he says, most of the time.

I have just read the book The Kitchen Readings: Untold Stories of Hunter S. Thompson by Michael Cleverly and Bob Braudis. It tells something of the later years in the life of Hunter S. Thompson, primarily focusing on how the author held court in his kitchen for many years, inviting guests to drink and party with him in his small Colorado home right up to the day he died from a self-inflicted shotgun blast. The book paints a picture of Thompson as a prankster, a jokester, and a a man who lived on the edge of the law, often getting into trouble with authorities as a result of his pranks and gunplay. I was amazed to find this video clip which shows Thompson in his kitchen with Ralph Steadmen, his illustrator!
A frient told me about this test; he's a power attorney practicing in Connecticut. He explained that the test could help me isolate some factors that could boost my functional (not chronological) age! In other words by following certain protocols, by making certain dietary choices, and by doing certain things to reduce stress I might actually be able to reverse my functional age and be healthier than the people I graduated high school with. That was the incentive I needed. The RealAge Test is this and so much more. Take the RealAge Test! It's free! You will be surprised at what you learn simply by taking the test online. It's fast and easy, and it's fun, too. Personally I often feel like I'm in my teens. But there are days when I feel I'm eighty. The test revealed that my level of stress could be reduced. I'm a young age (under 30) and married to a much older man who uses so many multivitamins it takes him fifteen minutes twice a day to down them all! He's in tiptop shape and exercises and does meditation to reduce stress. I myself drink high fructose corn syrup and have higher levels of stress. I vowed after taking this test to do things to reduce my stress level. I also vowed to get more sleep and to take my multivitamin religiously, like he does, and maybe even fish oil and cod liver oil! I was surprised how important stress is to your real age. The information on how to relax was very useful.
Hunter S. Thompson is one of the funniest writers I have read in a while (Thompson 19). I'm reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and am having a great time with it. The style is self-deprecating and the humor is often at the expense of the author himself. He makes fun of others, of course, but mostly of himself. He uses every imaginable drug, including cocaine and alcohol (and ether) and also has a fondness for weapons (knives and guns in particular). Before long Hunter would turn a gun on himself with lethal effect, so the book is somewhat prophetic, in a sad way. But the vitality of the prose and the combination of the text and art by Ralph Steadman, make it a true classic, equal to On the Road by Jack Kerouac, but easier to understand and relate to than that other road story.

Ralph Steadman was the illustrator of the books of Hunter S. Thompson, most famous for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the ink drawings he did for that book. There are now available some coffee mugs and even a cigarette lighter with the Steadman art. I wish I had a set of these mugs and the cigarette lighter. If I had the cigarette lighter I would probably try to find some marijuana and smoke it after I lit it with my official Steadman lighter, in honor of Hunter, of course. The art is a perfect fit for the frenetic style of Fear and Loating in Las Vegas, and the two artists went on to do many projects together.
Many famous people met through personal ads, including the Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima and his wife. With search for free you can meet new people in your area. The site allows free signup. This means you do not pay a fee to sign up for their site. The site is filled with people from all walks of life. The story of the site and the reason for the site are simple to explain. They will let you match your criteria with people from their list. Their list is actually very extensive. It allows you to look at pictures. The only distraction is that you also see a woman typing on her keyboard and that might cause you to be less focused on the person you're trying to chat up. Other than that the user interface is easy to navigate. There are other sites, including many that will allow you to search for people (mostly women) overseas. But this site is focused on helping you meet people in your area. There are many people online right now and if you went to the site you would probably find three or four people right in your neighborhood who you might like to meet. I would say that if it was good enough for Mishima . . . Hurry, sign up today and start searching the love of your life. It is free!
Here's a clip from the movie version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The books is fast-moving, written in a narrative style that follows an ancient pattern known as the voyage or journey, and the movie trailer seems to indicate that it follows the same pattern. Johnny Depp does an excellent job of imitating the slurred speech of Hunter S. Thompson, although he talks even more distinctly that Thompson, presumably so that the audience would understand what he says. I personally would have liked a little more incomprehensibility. The movie, however, suffers from an inability to render the thoughts of the characters and therefore it is all humor and very little ominous investigation of the mindset of Thompson's protagonist. That is the failing of all theatrical presentations and the one area where the novel and nonfiction triumphs over movies and theater. As Tom Wolfe points out, only books can delve into the "central nervous system" of the characters. Voice over and aside don't come close to the mental penetration that books can achieve.

Since this is a blog about art and artists, I can tell you right now that I know plenty of artists who could use a Same Day Payday Loan. That's because the life of an artist often requires sacrifices of time and effort toward artistic work, which leaves less time for business ventures. Payday Loans, however, are for everyone. They are available now. You don't have to wait. And the customers who use this service can easily access cash whenever they want it or need it. They can get the money they need for whatever they want, and they can do it online! That's the beauty of this service. I know that Balzac, the great French novelist, would have loved this service, and he would have used it all the time! You'll love it, too.
Thomas De Quincey could write like the waves of the ocean, in never ending sentences that roll on like waves. The words are melodies, the ideas refrains, the thoughts pile up one after another and seem to complete cycles of, and patterns of, ideas. His technique was complex, ordered, and meticulous. His prose was thoughtful, calculated, and full of stories. He worked harder at editing than any writer before or after, except perhaps Hemingway (who he was the exact opposite of). De Quincey also chose as his subject the extremities of the human mind and endurance. His work, The Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, is a deserved classic.
I have been reading a lot of Nietzsche since I was thirteen and he is without doubt my favorite philosopher; not only a philosopher, though, but the best writer I have encountered. Even in translation he rips through the prose like no one since Goethe. That being said, one of his hottest ideas is that nutrition and leisure are two of the most important things you can focus on for your mind. The third is where you live. Now Disney World rentals joins with the brilliant mind of the most brilliant German philosopher. Their philosophy is simple: they want to save you money when you visit Disneyland or any number of other central Florida locations. Are you a retired astronaut (I didn't think so!), or a fan of NASA? Then you might want to visit the Cape Canaveral launch site, about 40 miles from Orlando. At the same time you might want to save money. The best way to do this when going on a vacation is to avoid renting an expensive hotel room and instead renting a home or condo (or a villa, as they call them in Mexico) and having more space and more freedom to be yourself. As Nietzsche pointed out, where you live (and vacation) has a profound influence on your mind. There are some terrific deals to be had here, such as the condo (one bedroom one bath, sleeps 4) in Orlando which is only $50 per night! Check out the photos of the sites when you visit the Internet Web page listed above. You'll want to go on a vacation right away, and at these prices you'll be able to afford it, too.
There is a general feeling among the literati that mystery is low, not worth attention, so much fluff. Your average mystery has not much in the way of thought, not much in the way of plot, and not much in the way of character. Oh, Sherlock Holmes was an exception, of course, and so was Poe, but on the whole, mystery just isn't much to write home about. Which is why it may come as a surprise to find that Dickens considered mystery to be one of the mainstays of his novels, that is, one of the chief methods of making them interesting to readers. For example, in Bleak House there is a big mystery about who is Esther's mother. In Great Expectations there is a mystery about who is supplying financial assistance to Pip. There's plenty of mystery in Dickens. But thank heavens he never made it the sole focus of his work, wouldn't you agree?

Charles Dickens was not from a very poor family, despite what readers may think when encountering his themes of homelessness and poverty. When he was born, his family was upper middle class. When he was 12 his father was sent to debtors prison for a few months, and the entire family went with him to live in the prison! Charles Dickens then worked in a factory and felt all alone because, he said, it seemed to him that no one was helping him. These experiences contributed to his later themes of child labor. But to analyze his work on a socioeconomic level and from a social perspective, to me, has always seemed to miss the point. The point of Dickens is his lively portraits of characters. For example, Sir Leicester from Bleak House:
Sir Leicester Dedlock is only a baronet, but there is no mightier baronet than he. His family is as old as the hills, and infinitely more respectable. He has a general opinion that the world might get on without hills, but would be done up without Dedlocks. He would on the whole admit nature to be a good idea (a little low, perhaps, when not enclosed with a park-fence), but an idea dependent for its execution on your great county families.
These whimsical descriptions make Dickens a standout and do more to make his work enjoyable than his social critique, much of which is passe now.
There is no better substitute for a quick and hurried approach to appointments than a more leisurely and relaxed frame of mind. But as Emerson pointed out in his article "Self-Reliance," and as Thoreau urged us in his book Walden, the attainment of leisure time is not an easy task; it is one which requires some forethought and planning, especially in hectic times, such as those in which we live in the twenty-first century. For this reason it is worth looking at any means available to calm the soul and find extra time. I can think of no better method than to alter the clocks and watches you use. For example, a visit to thewatchery.com will illustrate for you, in graphic detail, all the different watches you can choose from, and the very act of making a selection should substantially relax the mind and allow you to get into a leisurely mindset, the prerequisite for a more relaxed approach to living. Tag Heuer watches are designed with your mode of living in mind. That being said, we're sure you'll be able to find a style that suits your needs and also one that inspires you to take the time to find a moment, a day, or a week or more, to relax in the way that Emerson and Thoreau (and all the great philosophers from Nietzsche to Aristotle) recommended. Check this out today! You can also give this as an early Christmas gift to your loved ones. I'm sure they will be thankful to you throughout the year.
